Betting Big on Gamification and Employee Productivity

The one word you should take into 2025: gamification.

According to a TalentLMS report, around 90% of employees agreed gamification was making them more productive at work. A statistic like that is impossible to ignore. Let’s get into it.

What is gamification? Gamification is the process of adding game elements to workplace processes, tasks, and activities to drive motivation, productivity, and engagement amongst employees.  Common game elements like rewards, points, challenges, and celebrations make work interactive, collaborative, and more fun. 

So, how does gamification improve employee productivity?

For starters, it taps into three core elements of our motivational system:

  1. Autonomy – People like to feel in control of their choices. Gameplay allows us to choose our own paths, understanding the risks and rewards of all of them
  1. Competency – People like to feel that they’re skilled and capable to complete their tasks. Gameplay fuels progression, keeping people motivated to succeed and keep reaching new goals.

Gamification also adds an element of fun to the workplace. Games help mitigate the stress of busy schedules, back-to-back appointments, and long days through their inherently jovial, friendly and rewarding nature. Games make people happy. Happy employees are more inclined to work harder.

How do you add gamification to the workplace? Here are some ideas:

  • Rewards System: When positive work behaviors – like on-time arrivals and no call-out – are rewarded with a points system, everyone wants to WIN. Use your rewards system to promote behaviors you want to see more of and ensure that points are redeemable for actual prizes.
  • Culture of Recognition: Having a space to celebrate and recognize outstanding work is another way to gamify the work experience.
